There has been a large debate on whether there is a certain gene that may identify a certain persons sexuality. Many believe it can be due to genes or can be due to environment, or both. After years of research and evidence, scientists have come to the conclusion that there is no 'gay gene'. They found some variants that may not directly affect sexual attraction but can still change the sexuality of a person. This includes the biological proccesses like male-pattern baldness, or the ability to smell certain chemicals. Even though it was found that not one single 'gay gene' exists, it is still one step closer to understanding human sexuality. It points to having nongenetic or environmental reasons which supports the point that human sexuality is fluid, can change at any time, and falls on a continuum.

No "Gay Gene"

With 23andMe becoming more and more talked about, some people have wondered if there is such a thing as a gene that makes someone gay. Based on all the data collected, it is impossible to determine if someone is gay based off of genetics. Sexual preference is similar to food preference, how could we collect someones DNA and know if they prefer apples over oranges? Exactly, we can not. This was a very thorough investigation and there was no evidence that could back up the gay gene theory. 23andMe is a scam considering they say they can analyze someone's DNA and determine if they are gay, but for a price of course. A researcher said it is more likely to be an element of the environment, but not disregarding the fact that someone does not choose to be gay, but it is simply how one feels.

In my opinion, I do not believe genetics is a major contribution to sexual orientation. We are a complex species and one can not help who are what they are attracted to. For someone to say being gay is a choice is the same thing as saying being straight is a choice. We can not help who we are, only the decisions we make. I also think it is unfair how 23andMe is taking advantage of people by saying they can provide answers when they are just providing false claims and making money.

New disorders found in children

Congenital disorder is one of the leading cause of infant mortalities worldwide. For the most part, researchers weren't able to find the cause nor find which children were at greater risks. All that researchers have learned was that genetic play a role in children with those disorders. Recently scientist with deep regrets have discovered fourteen new genetic disorders in children. Such news is bitter sweet because on one end, being able to identify the disorder creates hope that one day, there may be ways to treat or cure it.

Genetics in Homosexuality

Chromosome - what is, definition and function

Scientists have always asked themselves does homosexuality just occur due to the outside environment? Or are people born with a gene that make them homosexuals? Back in the day many thought of it as a disease and didn't want to be around homosexuals in fear of becoming one. We all know that is not the case.

Scientists are starting to believe that the answer is in the genes, but where? Marker Xq28 was found in 67% of gay men and that, "Xq28 plays some role in about 5 to 30 percent of gay men." Said Hamer. There is some evidence of this being passed down from the mother. More and more evidence is leading to the answer, but the exact answer is yet to be found.

I believe that it is a gene that causes homosexuality and that it will be found soon. This really fascinates me because things are still being discovered in genetics. And I feel that the understanding of homosexuality in terms of how it comes about and where it originates from is a good thing. It may also lead to the full acceptance of homosexuals around the world.

Homosexuality and Genes

There are many suspected influences of homosexuality in humans. Some believe that sexual orientation is socially influenced and some believe that it is a choice to be homosexual. In a new study it is suggested that it is influenced by genetic information. This study was led by Alan Sanders and it is the largest of its kind.

Over 400 pairs of gay brothers, some twins, participated in a genetic analysis that focused on two region of the human genome. Samples of blood and saliva were collected from each of the participants. The only trait that all 818 men shared was being gay. Two genes were identified in influencing sexual orientation in men. One of the genes is located on the X chromosome, which is one of the chromosomes responsible for determining a person’s sex. The other gene that was found to correspond to sexual orientation in men was found on chromosome 8.

The goals of this study were to contradict the notion that homosexuality is a choice and to “refute” the belief that gay people can be treated to be straight. It was stressed that sexual orientation is determined by numerous different factors from the environment to genes. There is not one reason for homosexuality.
