Is it Possible to Predict Your Odds for Getting a Commonly Known Illness?

According to researchers, now you can! An article that was recently posted by Dennis Thompson from HealthDay on February 20th stated that a gene-based test might be able to predict the possibility of your odds of getting some commonly known illnesses.

Currently, there are ten gene tests or scans that can be done that show the probability of an individual getting a certain illness. Some of the illnesses that can be tested are high cholesterol, asthma, obesity, kidney disease, heart disease, prostate cancer, type one and two diabetes, and even atrial fibrillation.

These tests are in their testing phase in clinical research in ten academic medical centers across the nation of the United States. For this study and testing, 25,000 participants have taken part and allowed researchers to identify as well as verify the precise spots on the genome to assess the probability of the tested illness and create an overall risk score. Currently, most of the participants are of European descent but researchers are widening their evidence to be able to review participants of different genetic ancestry.

The main goal for these researchers is to locate risks of illnesses that can be treated so they aren't giving people results of something they could do nothing about. This allows those who do have a higher risk for a particular illness to get preventative treatment so it does not become a threatening issue in the future.

This is going to be something amazing in the future! I believe that if this continues to be successful and yields accurate results, these tests are going to be in every hospital.  Since these tests target common treatable illnesses, they will overall improve the quality of life of many in the long run and prevent people from being in and out of hospitals, reduce the need for prescriptions, and more. Hopefully, once these ten tests are perfected, there can be new tests that follow for other common and maybe not-so-common illnesses.

Project Baseline Aims to Ward Off Illness Before We Get Sick

Unfortunately, when discovering diseases it is normally in the late stage of the disease when it is too late.  With new technology and research doctors are working on a way to determine if you will have a disease such as cancer before it shows and becomes apparent.  The thing with cancer is that the earlier you can detect the malignant cells the easier it is to treat and hopefully rid the cancer from your body.
Project Baseline, started by Dr. Gambhir, who lost his teenage son to brain cancer initiated the study involving 10,000 volunteers of different backgrounds to be studied vigorously for at least four years.  This project collects an immense amount of research on each healthy adult by "analyzing their micro biomes, sequencing their genomes, subjecting them to a variety of stance and assessing their cognitive health.  They are also equipping volunteers with new wearable technology from Verily that records their nightly sleep patterns and tracks their heart rhythms and physical activity." (O'Connor, 2018)  Dr. Gambhir is conducting this research to help himself better understand the development of diseases from the healthy stage, to the diseased stage.  Project Baseline looks for precursurs to cancer, cardiovascular disease, aortic aneurysms, and other killers, so that medical attention can be reached before it is too late.
The only downside to this research is that the scientists are conveying all of the research conducted on that patient back to them, which may cause anxiety and stress, leading to more tests needing to be done.  Doctors are working together to figure out a way to tell their patients the data found in a way which will not worry them and allow them to understand them fully without panicking.  Would you allow yourself to be one of the volunteers for Project Baseline?

Pauses in DNA Replication Potential Cause of Fatal Mutations

An article in the ScienceDaily summaries research done at the University of York that will explain the way the DNA breaks down inside a cell that contributes to cancer and other diseases. It was discovered that when DNA is being copied for protein synthesis there are frequent pauses which can create the potential for dangerous mutation to take place. The research concludes that the pauses occur to repair any faults during DNA copying and an efficient repair is crucial to avoid altering the genetic code and causing potentially fatal mutations.

There was not much information present about the research but I still chose this article because it offers a lot more. Understanding the cause of cancer and other fatal illness has always been a curious topic in science. I would never have thought that pauses in the copying of genetic material could ever be the cause. That is so absolutely fascinating, and I really want to do further research to know more information. This could lead to so many potential treatment opportunities.
