A Treatment for the Ill at Heart

Scientists have found a new gene which codes for a hormone that can be used to treat heart problems. According to an article published on Science Daily, when scientists first found this gene, named ELABELA, they tested for its purpose in the body by engineering zebra fish without the gene. From this experiment they found that ELABELA plays a key role in heart formation.
I think that this is an absolutely amazing study. There are so many people who suffer from heart problem; both young and old. If scientists were actually able to regulate and use this hormone, we may be able to not only effectively treat heart diseases but probably reconstruct damaged ones as well.

  1. As an EMT, I see a lot of patients with heart problems and its a very frightening experience for them. Knowing that in the near future there is a gene that can help the heart become healthier is great for those who suffer and are prone to have them through genetics. It will hopefully also make my job a little easier.
