Protein's Role in Congestion

Are you sick and tired of dealing with your seasonal congestion due to the cold? Well, you may be in luck. According to an article published on Science Daily a team of international scientists may be close to a treatment for your ailment. These scientist found that a certain protein, MUC5B, may play a significant role in lung congestion due to the common cold, as well as other more serious lung ailments such as cystic fibrosis. According to the article, MUC5B along with another protein MUC5AC are both found in the mucus ling the nose and lungs. Scientists have found that these proteins both play a part in illness that are due to an over production of mucus such as cystic fibrosis and asthma. To understand the role of MUC5B in these illness, the scientists studied mice that were missing the protein MUC5B and found that these mice were more susceptible to the illnesses previously mentioned. This is because the absence of this protein causes the over production of mucus. If this protein was in over abundance though, the scientist found that the body did not produce enough mucus, making the body susceptible to bacterial infections.
I think that this is a very important research. Many people suffer from these serious illnesses and if we can understand exactly how this protein works, we may be on our way to curing them of their affliction.

  1. I knew people who had asthma and have asthma; in fact, i used to be one of the people who had it as a youngster. It is very annoying to always cough until the mucus gets out, but then my mom completely got rid of it through herbal approaches. Finding the gene and researching more into to prevent asthma as well as illnesses that could be serious is a great idea and will benefit everybody with having one less trip to the doctors.
