Heart Attack Gene

The human heart is one of the most important organs in the body. The heart is the only way blood is being pumped throughout the body, and it is pretty much the life maintaining organ. With that said, about 600,000 people die of heart disease every year, and approximately 300,000 people die from heart attacks.  Scientists at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center did a study on MRP-14. This is better known as the heart attack gene. For years and years, the cause of heart attacks were a mystery, and although it is still a bit of unknown, the study of this gene was able to conclude that heart attacks and strokes are caused by MRP-14. MRP-14 clots in platelets, and these clots ultimately  trigger strokes and/or heart attacks. I think this discovery of this so called "heart attack gene" is remarkable and it will advance medicine and maybe even save some lives. Now that scientists know what may be a cause of heart attacks/ strokes, they can now look for ways to prevent them. In the future, this discovery may lead to more effective anti-thrombotic agents, ones that can target just the pathologic clots.

  1. I think this post is informative and I also finding it interesting because my grandfather had a heart attack and I get tested to make sure I won't have one at an early age like him. Studies like this can actually help my health and the health of many of other people who are prone to heart attacks.

  2. It would be amazing if scientists could create a way to prevent heart attacks. They are such a scary thing and the discovery of what triggers them could lead to ways of stopping them from occurring as frequently as they do.
