Adult Acne and Genetics

Have you ever thought about why some people have acne and others do not? It may be because of genetics. In a small number of individuals, acne continues into adult hood. Researchers conducted a study with 1,203 first-degree relatives of 204 adult acne cases. They also had a control group of 856 first-degree relatives of 144 non-acne volunteers. From the study, they concluded that people with adult acne had far more relatives with adult acne than those that were unaffected. Another study was done involving 458 pairs of monozygotic twins and 1,099 pairs of dizygotic twins. They found that 81% of twins with adult acne had a family history of it and 19% had adult acne due to environmental factors. 400 twins with acne had significantly low levels of apolipoprotein A1 when compared to 2,414 unaffected twins. This was the only found trait that all affected individuals shared. No other factors contributed to adult acne, only genetic susceptibility.

I have seen it to be common in people in my family to have adult acne. It seems to "run" in the family. This may be because of genetics!
