Finding the Colossal Squid

The colossal squid is the world's largest invertebrate. Growing as long as over six meters and weighing up to 500 kg the squid lives up to its name. The colossal squid lives in the Southern ocean where it lurks in the depths. Scientists have been searching for the elusive giants and they have finally caught a glimpse for the first time alive in their natural habitat. A team of researchers set out near the South Sandwich Islands, where they would drop a remote operated vehicle about 600 meters deep. While live streaming the vehicle's dive they were able to catch something on video never before seen. A juvenile colossal squid had been spotted. The squid was around 30 centimeters long and had a translucent coloring. The screenshot was immediately sent to squid biologist Aaron Evans where he was able to confirm the identity of the species.
