Labrador's genes might effect obesity risk

In a recent article from Science News, labs are said to be one of the most overweight dog breeds, grouped with other breeds such as golden retrievers and beagles. In a previous study by Eleanor Raffan at the University of Cambridge, the breeds that are prone to obesity contain a gene called PMOC. This gene tends to go hand-in-hand with another gene called DENND1B, which affects how an animal responds to food and is usually associated with higher body masses. Raffan suggests that dog owners with higher-risk breeds should ration their food intake. However, she knows that this is often easier said than done.

Knowing whether or not your dog is at higher risk for obesity before getting it will help you know what precautions to take when feeding it or giving it treats. It will help your dog's health in the long run, knowing before hand, and you might even help them live a longer life.
