Gene Therapy helping sickle cell disease

The article explains a study of a new gene therapy that can help sickle cell disease. There has been a clinical trial involving a few patients in the study. The therapy uses CRISPR/CA12 to help correct the genetic mutation that causes sickle cell disease.

The study included the patients to had their blood cells edited and then received chemotherapy to remove their old bone marrow and afterward had the edited cells put in. The results for the study ended up having all patients results to be positive. They developed healthy white blood cells and as well had their hemoglobin levels to be normal.

Researchers are hoping that these results are a way to help them lead to more successful treatments. More research needs to be done to develop and potential cure and confirm more positive results.
