This study had to do with ulcerative colitis and using a genome wide study for ulcerative colitis patients to identify the variations that can contribute to MR-UC. Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that can causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract which affects the lining of the colon. In this study there were 324 patients with MR-UC, which means medically refractory ulcerative colitis and 537 non-MR-UC patients. There were also 2601 healthy controls in this study. MR-UC was found to be associated more with a higher extensive of the disease.
This study is important, because it is important to know how it could possibly be treated with different types of variations that there are for this disease. Being able to understand that for some people it is harder to treat with medications is also important, because there could be new medications that could be found from the genomes.
I wish there were more studies on ulcerative colitis. People really struggle with he affects of UC, although it can be manageable with medication, it can still be very complicated to deal with especially during flare ups.
