Barley is a type of grain that was amongst the first plants domesticated by humans. Barley is a staple crop in many areas of the world, while also being one of the main ingredients of several alcoholic beverages. Thanks to the work of a large group of scientists, the entire genome of barley has been sequenced. This will allow for more variations of barley to be produced. In addition, the project will also increase our understanding of other cereal crops.
I was surprised by the this news, as I didn't know that barley was currently being sequenced. I can imagine that, since barley has been sequenced, that more types of grain will be sequenced in the future. Personally, I am interested in seeing what genes these species would have in common. It will also be interesting to see what new varieties of barley are produced as a result of this research.
