Cancer May Leave Early Warning Signs in Cheek Cells

Everyone knows that when they smoke, their chances of cancer increase. It has been found now that cheek cells show could provide early warning signs of cancer. A study was done with 790 women where each one had their cheek swabbed for their cells. It came back that those who did smoke were more likely to have certain changes associated with cancer. The researchers were looking for changes in cells where a system of chemicals and proteins attach to DNA and turn genes on and off. The researchers also found a "signature" of smoking and once finding this then they could differentiate between normal and cancerous cells. These changes are associated with cancer development and are triggered by things such as cigarette smoke. This study will help people by possibly detecting their cancer early or better predict it.
This is such a great discovery. I really think that this will help in such a large way and it'll make detecting cancer a lost easier and faster. I would highly suggest and definitely think that everyone who smokes cigarettes should get this test done because it can have many benefits for them.

  1. This is great, maybe they will come out with an annual check up for smoker's to catch cancer in its earlier stages!

  2. While cancer is of course an awful diagnosis it would be great to be able to detect it in its earlier stages using this method! Imagine all the people who could seek appropriate medical attention and be saved thanks to this early detection. I'd love to see where exactly this study goes and the impact it has in the future.

  3. This is an amazing discovery, detecting cancer at an earlier stage is beneficial for those who smoke because they have the chance of removing those cancerous cells before it spreads in the whole body. Which majorly impacts individuals to better themselves for a healthy lifestyle.

  4. Smokers are going to smoke regardless of the risks. It's kind of bittersweet that to find out this discovery, they had to study people who smoke, don't care about the risks, and are in the process of getting cancer. Even though I do not smoke and don't agree with it, it is nice to see that those who do smoke will be able to see early on, if and when they obtain cancer. This will increase their chance of survival since it will be in its early stages.
