Sleep Problems Tied to Type 2 Diabetes

A new study has shown that women with sleeping problems are at an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes.  A person has type 2 diabetes if their body does not produce enough insulin. Having diabetes does not mean your kids might get if for sure, because the inheritance pattern is not that simple. However, type 2 diabetes does have a stronger link to family history.

This study started with 133,353 healthy women and after a 10-year follow up, they found 6,407 cases of type 2 diabetes.
The researchers in the study looked at four sleeping problems:
1) Difficultly falling or staying asleep
2) Frequent snoring
3) Sleep duration of less than 6 hours
4) Sleep apnea or rotating shift work
The women, who possessed all four sleeping problems, had 4 times the risk of developing this disease. Dr. Hu, has said that sleep problems are associated with an excess secretion of two hormones: ghrelin and cortisol. Cortisol increases stress and insulin resistance. Both of these are linked to metabolic problems, which also increase the risk for diabetes.

This article broadened my knowledge on type 2 diabetes because I knew very little on this topic. It is also always good knowing newer possible symptoms of diseases for future reference.
