Nobel Prize awarded to Chemist for DNA discovery.

Scientists Thomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich, and Aziz Sancar were the ones to receive the prestigious Nobel Prize for chemistry this year. The trio was researching about the different ways in which cells repair damaged DNA to be able to protect the sensitive genetic information stored in said DNA. Their research helped explain in further detail how the cells within us function as well as the possible cures for many diseases. The trio is responsible for the discoveries of new molecular mechanisms which help out in the role of stabilizing DNA. DNA itself is very unstable, undergoing a variety of changes every day. The scientists have discovered the following in ways of repairing DNA: base excision repair; special enzymes remove damage in DNA, mismatched repair mechanism; a mechanism that corrects the bad pairings between nucleotides during cell division, and how cells repair DNA caused by UV radiation.
