Short people are more likely to develop coronary heart disease

Researchers at the University of Leicester have been doing research which shows that their is a direct relationship between short people and their risk of coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease is when the arteries supplying blood to the heart become narrowed due to build up of plaque. For many years we have known that short people are at a higher risk, but we have not known that if your socioeconomic background and nutritional behaviors were effectors of this. The research that Professor Samani and her fellow researchers have shared says that there is no direct relationship between the two things. Their research has shown that people who are 5 ft are at 36% more risk of coronary heart disease than an individual who is 5 foot 6 inches. Their research is not fully done, but they have made some major leaps in understanding the complexity of coronary heart disease.

This article in particular is very scary to me because I myself am only 5 feet 1 inches and to think that something that I have no control over (my height) can put me at such a higher risk for coronary heart disease. There are things like cancer that are also out of our hands, but you can always attribute the rise in cancer to the rise of our modern society, but my height will never change. Its also scary to think because our younger generations are shorter and shorter. Coronary heart disease is one of the largest killers among young people and that is scary.

  1. I think that this is something very surprising to read. I wonder how true this could be. Hopefully further research and more studies can be done to conclude if it is something to worry about.
