Possibility for Same Sex Couples to have their own genetic children
A recent study performed at Cambridge University suggests same sex couples are a step closer to having offspring due to a stem cell research breakthrough. Research conducted has demonstrated it is possible to make human egg and sperm cells using skin. Not only does this study help gay and lesbian couples, but also men and women who are infertile.
Research was conducted using skin from five adults to create stem cells that make sperm and eggs in the body. In total, new cell lines were created from ten different donor sources.
The study suggests that same sex couples could have babies together in just two years, which is truly amazing. If the research follows through with this study and more developments are made, this will be a major breakthrough in science, helping tons of same sex couples and infertile men and women aspiring to be parents one day.

This is a very cool article I have been following this part of science for awhile now and to see that they are coming up with ways to break down the walls of conventional child bearing is amazing not only scientifically, but socially.
ReplyDeleteI don't necessarily agree with the ethics of this science. I have nothing against same sex couples, but I am slightly apprehensive about the social pressures and difficulties the children in this case may have growing up. Personally, I can't imagine growing up without a mom or without a dad. Men and women are very different from both a social and biological standpoint, so in my opinion it is only fair to give children parents from both sides of the spectrum rather than only one. That being said, in the case of adoption by same sex couples, which currently exists, these issues are irrelevant as those children may not have had any parents at all. I think in that case it is totally fine.
ReplyDeleteI would have never imagined this would ever be possible! However, I disagree Sam H. Children have been proven to do just fine in regards to having same sex couple parents. There have been several studies that same sex couple children often do even better than having heterosexual parents. Your point about having a male and female role model is important! However, just because you have same sex parents doesn't mean you cannot get this type of exposure. Relatives, friends, and even teachers can make for excellent role models to look up to regarding the lacking male/female figure. Children with single parents do just fine!
