Chipotle to Stop Using Genetically Altered Ingredients
On Monday Chipotle was to announce that from now on all food made will be GMO free. The company has always been straight forward about what foods they cook containing genetically engineered ingredients. In 2013, they became very successful because they were the first fast food chain to include that type of information. The trend is starting to take off with other grocers such Whole Foods who will provide information about GMO's on all products by 2018. However, Chipotle did claim that some products will still contain GMO products such as soft drinks and sweeteners which they honestly have no control over anyway.
They're are multiple issues that will be complicated to control to be fully GMO free because a lot of baking soda, corn starch, color agents, and etc have genetically engineered ingredients in them that companies need to use to cook. Although, the company is doing a good job there has been issues with having shortages of products such as beef. The well known option of choosing carnitas pork was unavailable at some Chipotles because of a failed audit of suppliers who were not meeting the standards of raising pigs. Its nice to see a company actually have concern for its customers to create a healthy environment.
The goal Chipotle is working hard to accomplish is easier for them than other companies mainly because they naturally use less ingredients than its competitors. Chipotles entire menu only uses 68 ingredients compared to 81 ingredients at other companies. Another problem why its hard for most companies to be GMO free is because 90 percent of corn and soy grown in the United States is genetically modified and up until now Chipotle was using soy oil to fry its chips and tortillas. The most important task is to find companies big enough to keep up with production which will also increase the price of the product. For example, Chipotles flour tortillas are now made with non-GMO canola oil which cost more. Unfortunately, the company may now have to raise the prices of food this year because of it. In my opinion, I rather pay a little more for healthier food.

People today are increasingly concerned about GMOs. This will absolutely benefit Chipotles reputation and help business. It is nice to see that Chipotle is working with its customers to give them a better product.
