Bipolar disorder affects one percent of the population throughout the world. It is a psychiatric disease that is described as reoccurring periods of highs and lows (mania and depression). The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene leads to a susceptibility in the chance of developing this disorder. Tests in the laboratory were done to test for the presence of linkage disequilibrium between two polymorphisms in the BDNF gene. The study was done using 238 nuclear families. The results showed that susceptibility of bipolar disorder was linked to a DNA variant in the vicinity of the BDNF locus. More than one gene has been known to be involved in the genetic inheritance of this disorder. It has a non-Mendelian mode of inheritance, it has a complex mode of inheritance. Studies have found that decreased levels of serotonin have been found and linked to this disorder. The BDNF (GT)n repeat has been studied in schizophrenia and other mood disorders as well.
Bipolar disorder can be inherited and the BDNF locus may very well be part of this. Overlaps with some mood disorders makes it more difficult, but they seem to be related.
The fact that this disorder can be passed on from generation to generation is rather sad. It is a serious disorder and the mode of inheritance is something that would be good to know when having children.
