Oldest Hominin DNA Sequenced: Mitochondrial Genome of a 400,000-Year-Old Hominin from Spain Decoded

Recently, bones of a hominin was found in cave in northern Spain. The genus Homo from Sima de los Huesos was found to be 400,000 years old. The DNA sequence of the hominin was found. They ran test to determine its relation to other species and it was found that the hominin was closely related to Denisovans which are extinct relatives of neanderthals from Asia.Sima de los Huesos, the bone pit, is a cave system in norther Spain which accounted for the largest amount of hominin finds.

  1. Until this article the oldest human fossils I knew of were in Africa and Australia. It is amazing how there is so much information out in the world that we have not even touched yet.
