The protein clumps that form in the brain are called amyloid, and research teams attached a special molecule to the fluorene compounds to measure their activity in the body and it was found that these proteins (the amyloid beta peptide to be specific) are the most responsible for destroying neurons in the brain. However, it would have been informative to read the mechanism of how exactly spin-labeled fluorenes could prevent amyloid formation-- it should be remembered that amyloids form when irregularly folded proteins aggregate their exposed hydrophobic side chains into the interior, creating a precipitate. The exact mechanism and entropy changes that fluorenes has on this process would have been informative to read.
