Red wine to help control obesity

The compound piceatannol is able to prevent the growth of immature adipose cells. According to a report in The Journal of Biological Chemistry and reported at sciencedaily.com piceatannol has a similar structure to resveratrol found in red wine. Resveratrol is the compound found in red wine that aids in cancer prevention. The body converts piceatannol from resveratrol. According to Kim’s research piceatannol effects the development of immature adipose cells. Adipose cells do not begin to store body fat until after they are developed. The piceatannol alters the timing and functioning of gene expression in immature adipose cell. Insulin action is also altered. The adipose cells delay or are unable to carry out adipogenesis as a result. This research was done using cell cultures made in a laboratory and was sponsored by The Purdue Research Foundation.
