Preeclampsia Caused By Changes In Gene Expression

Researchers claim that preeclampsia may be caused by gene expression changing of a key enzyme.  It also produces an increased chance of pregnant women with preeclamsia to have blood clots. Epigenetics have been thought to be part of the molecular cause of preeclampsia.
In a current study, an important enzyme was found in higher levels inside the blood vessels of pregnant mothers with preeclampsia. This important enzyme is called thromboxane synthase.  Its gene codes for this enzyme, which is involved in several processes including cardiovascular disease and stroke. This results in the production of thromboxane that increases the risk of high blood pressure and blood clots.                                                                                                                                                                             According to Scott W. Walsh, Ph.D.,  "It is the first study to show that epigenetic alterations in the blood vessels of the mother are related to preeclampsia."  The main epigenetic mechanisms is methylation of the DNA.  It controls the phenotypic expression of genes. The increase of this enzyme reduces DNA methylation and introduces neutrophils in the blood vessels. Future treatments for preeclampsia may include supression of the thromboxane synthase, blockafe of the thromboxane receptors or a diet rich in folate.                                                                                                                           These findings could lead to the best treatment options for high blood pressure.  It can also lead to the prevention of blood clots.  It can not only potentially save the life of the mother, but also the life of the unborn child.  New treatment options would be a great advancement in medicine.
