Is There A Limit to Gene Sequencing?
Recent research and advancement in Genetic Decoding have shown that within the next decade, finding out your one decoded genome will cost within the $100-$200 range. A study recently shown in Science Translation Medicine shows that thought one may be able to see what diseases or risks they are at risk for, it does not show what they could develop in the future. These conditions are considered negative results since they may not show up on a genome report, but could in fact appear in the person at one time. Many of these examples are forms of cancer, such as Ovarian cancer which was studied by Dr. Kenneth Kinzler, co author of the report in Science Translation Medicine. Kinzler feels that these genome reports could give consumers a false sense of security since many serious diseases will not show up on these genome analysis. Kinzler warns that a negative result for a certain disease is not a "free pass" from ever obtaining the disease, but rather your chances are just smaller. Though this process cannot ensure that you will never obtain a certain disease, it does however give accurate predictions for many other conditions, and in the long run is expected to give more positive contributions than negative.
