DNA As A Tool To Prove Innocence

The New York Times reports that seventeen years ago four men were found guilty of a brutal rape and murder of  a woman. Now, DNA evidence has linked a different man to that crime, a man who actually got caught for murdering another woman a few years later. The Cook County State Attorney office in Chicago do not believe the DNA evidence alone should grant the four men innocence because they confessed to the crime during questioning. When the event happened, the four men were all minors and researchers have showed that minors tend to make false confessions due to being scared. One of the convicted men noted that he confessed to the crime because he was terrified and exhausted for being questioned for hours. New evidence suggests that the four men may now be innocent, but the question remains, does DNA prove innocence?

  1. Technically, if the DNA of sexual assault doesn't match that of the 4 convicted men I think they should be able to be released. False imprisonment should not continue if there is such hard evidence proving these men's innocence.

  2. I agree completely with Michael. If new DNA was found not linking the four men to the crime, then the evidence should be released and the true criminal thrown in prison.
