Mutation in a single gene gave us the ability to be human

A study led by Yale school of Medicine found that mutations in a gene, centrosomal NDE1, might be responsible for the expansion for the human cerebral cortex in evolution. The scientists did a genetic analysis of 3 families, 1 Turkish and 2 Pakistani, that have offspring with the most severe case of microcephaly. They found that the NDE1 gene is responsible for the deformity. This allowed the scientists to infer that this gene is one of the key players in the evolution of the human brain to what it is now.

I think its great that scientists are able to use the information from the deformity of the brain to make connections to evolution. This can be helpful in trying to completely answer all of the questions that people may have about evolution. It's great that more and more questions are being answered about evolution.

  1. i read about this. its extremely fascinating how they can link something like brain size to genetics. maybe in the future they can link this to determining children with special needs at an even younger age.

  2. I think that study needs to have more people in it. There should be more families and should be studied further. What the scientists now have are just a hunch, now it must go further in their research to confirm this.
