The Relationship Between Population Growth and Genetic Diversity within Koalas

A recent study in Australia focused on the growing population of Koala Bears after suffering from dramatic drop in population size. It was originally thought that in a bottleneck population there would be low genetic diversity, however this was not the case with this species. Scientists have predicted that rapid population growth is the key for increasing genetic diversity within the population of Koalas in Australia. After looking at 418 Koalas, which represented 27 populations across Australia, they have concluded that DNA recombination is the result of this rapid expansion. I just found this study interesting because I originally thought that a bottleneck event would cause a population to only produce a specific set of genes with no diversity since a bottleneck event would essentially get rid of a whole set of certain genes within a species.
