Scientists Discover Protein Crucial for the Survival of Malaria

Malaria is currently known as one of the most dangerous infectious diseases in the whole world with a high mortality rate. Scientists worldwide have been looking for way to combat against this disease alongside studying how it grows and spreads between humans and mosquitos.

Researchers have discovered that a protein called Aurora-related kinase (ARK1) which is a key component in organizing the spindle which separates genetic material so new parasite cells can form. When testing to see what happens when disabling ARK1 in parasites, it was revealed that parasites could no longer create proper spindles resulting in the prevention of the parasites multiplying. This discovery means that scientists now have a potential way of targeting this protein in Malaria in order to prevent the spread of this disease while also not harming the patient.
