Is the heart aging too fast?

Scientists at the University of East Anglia found a way to uncover the "true" age of the heart using an MRI. Learning your heart's functional age can allow you to change your lifestyle and create a positive relationship with your heart. Unhealthy lifestyle changes can dramatically accelerate one's risk for heart disease and the heart's functional age. These early findings can help prevent heart disease before the diagnosis. People with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure tend to be at risk for multiple types of heart disease. A study was done in the UAE, collaborating with hospitals in the UK, Singapore, and Spain to study hearts. They received scans from 600 people, 200 of whom are healthy individuals and 400 of them with either diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. With these scans, the imaging measured the strength and size of people's hearts to calculate their functional age. The results showed that the healthy individuals had a functional heart age very similar to their actual age. For the unhealthy group, the results showed that their functional heart age was significantly higher than their actual age.

Heart disease is one world's biggest causes of death. Finding the root cause early on can potentially save millions of individuals. People with health issues like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure should ask their doctor for a solution or treatment plan to prevent early on set heart disease. Eating cleaner, exercising more, and following the doctor's orders should help prevent heart attacks and strokes. Getting the scan done with an MRI and knowing your heart's functional age will help prevent future heart diseases and live a long, healthy, fulfilling life.
