Micro-nanoplastics found in the heart

Micro-nano plastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are created in large industries or factories. How are these small fragments of plastic entering our arteries? The main source of plastics in our system has been from the food we eat and the water we drink. Sometimes, these plastics are also found in the cutting board, plastic utensils, and the plastic water bottles we use. Plastics that are commonly found in the ocean waste are mixed into the soil and water and build up in the food chain.  Over time, these plastics are built up in our systems and can lead to blockage in our systems. Doctors and Researchers have found that micro-nano plastics can lead to inflammation in the body. These markers highlight plaque buildup leading to the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and even temporary blindness.

A study in Italy was done to compare the health of the participants and the level of nano plastics in their system. They gathered 50 willing participants and divided them into 3 groups: people with healthy arteries, those with plaque and no symptoms, and those experiencing symptoms due to the plaque buildup. The results showed that the concentration of the plastics was 16 times higher among people with plaque and no symptoms, and with symptoms. It also showed that the results were 51 times higher in those who had experienced a stroke. This emphasized that we should be careful of what we eat and how it is sourced. The American Heart Association made it clear that it is important to study what these materials do to our bodies and adjust our lifestyle to maintain a happy and healthy life.

  1. I had no idea plastic could actually end up in our arteries like that, this is kind of scary but really important to know. It’s kind of concerning how something so common, like using plastic utensils or bottles, can slowly affect our health. The part that stuck with me was how much more plastic was found in people who had strokes. It really makes me want to pay more attention to what I’m eating and where it comes from.
