The article, Scientific supremacy: How do genetic narratives relate to racism, covers how racism and support for health care policies are impacted by genetic explanations of racial differences. There were many findings from this research. One conclusion made from this article was that the media’s portrayal and explanations of genetic differences found between races can shift the perspective of the consumer (of the media). This article also noted that explanations on the genetics of racial differences can impact policy preferences in politics. It was also found that deterministic genetic narratives increase racism while a reduction of overt racism was seen with conditional genetic narratives. This article also mentioned that genetic explanations of racial differences is associated with beliefs that reinforce racial inequalities.
I believe that this article is extremely important, especially in today’s world. Many people like to point out that racism is not a big problem, however, with studies like these, it is shown that some people have foundational beliefs of racial superiority. Articles like this challenge our ways of thinking and they allow us to find the problems in how we express certain facts—like genetic differences. Finding these problems is only one step on the path to eradicate racial inequality.
