Alzheimer’s has always challenged scientists and healthcare providers due to its limited treatment options and its complex causes.
Alzheimer’s develops due to a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Genetic factors have been critical in understanding the mechanisms of the disease. The APOE has been extensively studied since it has certain variations that significantly increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
In April of this year a novel gene was identified. This gene plays a critical role in regulating brain inflammation as well as immune system response. This gene is now understood to influence the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques which are a hallmark characteristic of Alzheimer’s. By targeting this gene, scientist could be able to mitigate the inflammatory processes that cause brain cell damage.
Current Alzheimer’s treatments mostly focus on symptoms management which does not offer much relief. This newfound gene offers the opportunity to develop targeted therapies aimed at the root cause of the disease.
My thoughts:
This recent discovery feels like a milestone for both science and humanity. Alzheimer’s takes a lot from individuals. To think that we are so close to understanding a new genetic factor behind this disease is extremely exciting.
