And To Think Throwing Away Trash Was Safe

It’s frustrating how so many people from the North end up moving to Florida, especially when it gives the state a bad reputation. The original case dates back to 2009 and came from Queens, New York. It all began when DNA testing, still relatively new at the time in murder investigations, uncovered an unusual connection. The body of an elderly man was found, and the DNA evidence led to a surprising match with another individual. After murdering his uncle, whether innocent or not, Anthony Scalici fled to Florida. He was eventually found guilty thanks to the discovery of a discarded fork. After 15 years and the use of over 32,000 utensils, a single fork was finally traced back to him. DNA evidence from the fork matched the unidentified DNA found at the crime scene, leading to Scalici's conviction.

Every family has its share of disagreements, but it's rare for them to escalate to murder and fleeing the state. For 15 years, the case of Rosario Prestigiacomo, 64, remained unsolved, with only suspicions held by detectives from Florida and New York. This case highlights how far DNA testing has advanced over the years, proving that DNA from crime scenes can still provide accurate matches, even after time has passed. The vast amount of DNA and fingerprint data collected from crime scenes is stored in databases, helping to solve hundreds of thousands of murders and other crimes each year.
