Food Insecurity Affecting College Students

 Food Insecurity Affecting College Students

Food insecurities have been more common throughout the years. Food insecurities are more common among college students with low-income parents. Food insecurity is known to be associated with the development of physical, and mental effects, and has involved serious diseases such as diabetes. Contrarily, it is not seen to affect the mass population of students who attend Rutgers University, however, this issue confers drastically to the well-being of people who do face it. Food insecurity has affected many Americans, approximately one out of eight Americans. In America, food insecurity has affected over thirty-eight million people and almost half were children. People that suffer from food insecurity were known to have financial difficulties. People that are afflicted with food insecurity were seen to be in bad health conditions with very little health care provided for them.

Food insecurity has a significant negative influence on college success in general and learning outcomes in particular. Food insecure students frequently have trouble focusing, which makes it harder for them to take in and remember knowledge during lectures and coursework. Tiredness along with lack of fuel are other effects of poor diets that make it difficult to focus on schoolwork while engaging in other school-related events. Not eating properly can also cause tension and anxiety, which can worsen cognitive decline and lower success in school. Consequently, these students might face difficulties with poorer grades, increased dropout rates, and decreased overall academic performance, which could impact their long-term learning objectives and professional aspirations.

  1. I think this article is great for raising awareness to the major issue of food insecurity and how it is affecting people. However, I think one of the biggest factors research overlooks is how many students who aren't food insecure are consuming low-quality food that is equally, if not more, detrimental to their health. Unfortunately, for most college students high quality food is not an affordable option so they are forced to resort to either fast food or dining hall food.
