Gene Mutation helps to protect against parkinson

There has been a rare genetic mutation that has been found in 1% of people of European descent that can cut their risk of Parkinson's disease in half. The article explains how this study has helped to advance a better understanding of why people may get Parkinson's and how they may have discovered new therapy.

As the researchers explain throughout the gene variant in a micro protein is called SHLP2 which is what protects the cells. This shows that people with these mutations have a lower risk of Parkinson's but also seem to be less likely to develop other diseases.

This mutation is what helps boost the stability of SHLPS which is helping to protect the brains from being damaged by Parkinson's. This study is still in the process but it can start helping to develop new treatments for Parkinson's and also understand other genetic mutations.
