The article, it explains how there has been a recent study on how fish oil supplements may help older adults who have a high genetic risk of Alzheimer's disease. This is when people carry the APOEF gene variant which includes the high risk of Alzheimer's.
The study involved 102 seniors with low omega-3 levels who were given an MRI scan to keep track of changes in their brains. The ones who ended up taking the fish oil started to show a small reduction in brain damage compared to the ones who took a placebo. In comparison, the that was not much difference. The most noticeable change was for the APOE4 carriers who showed to have less brain damage after a year of taking fish oil.
In conclusion of the study, fish oil may help some people but not all. It is not guaranteed that it will help prevent dementia. The research did end up stating that there should be more studies to confirm these findings and explore the effect on many people.
Super interesting research! I have definitely heard about how fish oil can be beneficial for health but I never knew that it could impact brain health. I wonder what is in fish oil that seems to reduce brain damage??
