Genetic landscape of Schizophrenia

There has been a study done where researchers study the gene that is involved in schizophrenia which is by examining part of the brain called caudate nucleus. they have looked at brain tissue from many people who have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or as well no mental illness.
After performing their analysis with gene expressions etc. They found changes in 2700 genes in people who have schizophrenia. As well they have also found that antipsychotic medication affects gene activity. It was difficult for the researchers to tell how much of these changes were due to the medication or schizophrenia itself. One of the important findings included that the gene DRD2 (controls dopamine levels) was very much lower in people with schizophrenia which can explain some of the symptoms.
Researchers have brought this study to their attention to see how genes interact and how it can help to develop better treatments to understand the effects on the brain.
