Autism Spectrum Disorder linked to 70 genes

                      

Recent studies show that more than 70 genes are associated with autism spectrum disorder and more than 250 with strong links to neurodevelopment. They were able to pinpoint seven potential genes that are predicted to increase the risk of autism there is being PLEKHA8, PRR25, FBXL13, VPS54, SLFN5, SNCAIP, KDM5A, and TGM1. The study focused on how language delay and dysfunction should be reconsidered as core components of autism due to autism being highly heritable Those who had language delay had a higher likelihood of inheriting a polygenic score associated with autism. Researchers examined how children who inherited rare mutations from unaffected parents with polygenic risk were more likely to have autism than those with parents who carry a single rare mutation and may not show signs of autism even if their children did. While there are approximately 1 in 54 children in the US diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or a neurodevelopment disorder there are only about 30% of the cases can be explained by a genetic mutation.
