Epigenetics and Skin Disorders

According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, epigenetics is defined as “the study of changes in gene function that are heritable and that are not attributed to alterations of the DNA sequence.” It relates to how our environment as well as external behaviors change our gene function. Epigenetics is studied in various forms including DNA methylation, histone modification as well as gene silencing. When it comes to conditions of the skin, a majority of them exist due to genetics and hereditary factors. Within dermatology, skin disorders such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) have been studied using epigenetics in order to determine  the right course of action relating to treatment. The regulation of epigenetics within CTCL has allowed for the development of epigenetic therapies.  Aside from skin disorders caused from autoimmune related issues, inflammatory skin disorders such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis have also been studied using DNA methylation as the focus of research to better understand the manifestations of these disorders. Although it is understood how inflammatory diseases are caused from external factors, there is further research to be done from the perspective is epigenetics for skin disorders stemming from autoimmune issues as well as inflammatory.

  1. I think this could help a lot of people in the future. Having skin issues can be so frustrating. Creating this new way to study and plan a course of action could benefit so many struggling with skin issues. Good job on this!

  2. I think it would be really cool to see whether or not things like anxiety disorders or depression could affect your skin.:) Great job!
