Is intelligence determined by genetics?

Intelligence is difficult to study due to the fact that there are an ample amount of variables that influence a person's intelligence. There are also different types of intelligence. The different types include the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, and understand complex ideas. Many studies focus on IQ for a quantitative measurement of intelligence. Based off of the article written by Genetics Home Reference, about 50 percent of the difference in intelligence among individuals are from genetics. Scientist's believe that many genes are involved with intelligence.   However, environment has a huge impact on someone's intelligence.

  1. Its strange to think about how ones genes affect how they think but it makes sense. I wouldn't really want to be in a study of this but it would be cool if they could determine the genes exact influence.

  2. It makes you wonder how much of intelligence comes from just genes and how much comes from hard work. Genes more than likely influence the maximum amount you can learn and how quickly but is there a way to improve upon that outside of inheritance.

  3. I would say that more than anything intelligence is rooted in the environment a child is exposed to when they are in their early developmental stages. Hard work leads to success later, but I think when speaking to natural intelligence, whether applied to hard work or not, early childhood development is the biggest factor.
