A recent study has published the
largest ever sequence of genomes of people who have lived long,
disease-free lives. People used in the study were around the age of
80 and upwards, without suffering from autoimmune disease, blood
clots, cancers, diabetes, dementia, heart attack, kidney failure or
stroke. The team compared the sequenced genomes of 511 long-lived
well elderly people with those of 686 adult who had been sequenced
for a different study and represented the general population. None of
the control population used in this study carried rare variants of a
gene called COL25A1, a gene associated with brain plaques.
The steps being made in various
sequencings, is pretty great. Moving towards studies like this and
other studies of important sequencing are going to have a huge
payoff. This is project may be the largest ever case-control study in
which the genomes of all participants were sequenced. The more this
gets done the more information will become available improve, just
like with the technology it will be using.
After reading this article, I want to look into further detail about the gene called COL25A1 that associated with brain plaques. Although none of the control subject had this gene, what would be the result if someone did? Would they have a complications such as kidney failure or a stroke? Or is there a chance it could be just a ghost gene that is there but is not activated or shows affects? Is the gene dominant or recessive? These are questions I would like to look at in further detail with other small details.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does the brain plaque do? It also does not definitely mean that the COL25A1 directly correlates to longer lives, it could very well be a combination of genes or the lack of certain genes.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the research being done in this area will continue and that one day we will truly know the cause for why some people never have any health issues no matter how well they take care of their bodies and why some families have a large majority of members that lives well past average life expectancy. Very cool stuff!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if my great grandmother would be a good subject for this study because she's still living at 109 years old. She used to smoke tobacco daily and she didn't really live a healthy lifestyle. Is her old age due to genetics ?
