Mom's Genes May Affect How Fast You Age

A few years back a genetic study was done where researchers found out that you can age faster due to mutated genes that are passed down from your mother and appear right at the time of birth.
This was found out when damaged DNA was found in the mitochondria, which partly controls the rate of aging and is also contains genes that are from your mother and this also differs from the DNA that comes from the nucleus of the cell that comes from both parents. This study was performed on experimental mice by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging in Germany.
Mitochondria becomes damaged over time due and this causes the cell's energy production to go down which is one of the contributions to aging. A study on mice was done to see the effects of mitochondrial DNA damage on aging and estimated their again rates taking into account fitness such as weight, fertility, and also red blood count. It was found that there were increased levels of damage in mice with low levels of fitness but the influence of mitochondrial DNA damage as to environmental stressors is still unclear. This may have many suggestions that will be interesting for the aging of humans.
Hopefully after this finding and with the study of testing the mitochondrial damage in mice, that this will eventually help humans and we can try and help to see if there can be a stop to the damage. I also found this article super interesting in the fact that we already have aged right from the time we are born because we inherit the damaged mitochondrial DNA our mother gave us.
