Peeking Into the Sex Lives of Endangered Turtles

Because sea turtles live far out to sea, little has been understood about their breeding habits until now.

The article discusses that through using genetics, scientists have determined that they can look into the sex lives of the hawks bill sea turtle.  Due to this species of turtle being out at sea for 30 years at a time in some occasions, it is quite difficult to study them let alone their mating behavior.  Scientist were curious if females mated with more than one male before laying their eggs, so they decided to construct a paternal genotype.  The results showed that over 90% of females mated with a single male.  This means that the species has a high level of monogamy.

I chose this article because I have a strong interest in animals and this species is listed as endangered.  Thankfully, this information helps scientists conclude that the turtle is not in as rough of a shape as they thought it was.

  1. Gotta love finding out one of our turtle friends is not as bad off as we thought. Also we get to see that turtles aren't to different from humans. We tend to be monogamous when in a relationship/married while there is a 10% that seem to not abide by those rules. Obviously, that was a joke, but regardless a good article and a good read.

  2. turtles are similar to some birds to where they only have one mate for life. that is impressive knowing how they spend so much time away from eachother
