It is common belief that dogs originated in Europe and were domesticated there before being brought to the Americas. New research, though, shows that some breeds of dogs lack markers showing that they are of European descent. This means that these breeds either originated here in the Americas or were from an earlier migration from Asia.
This new research is led by Peter Savolainen at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and involves specific breeds, concentrating on Carolina Dogs. This research is very interesting because it is amazing how DNA can tell us the origin of a species. There now are tests that you can perform to determine your ancestry through your DNA. This type of technology is writing the history of evolution.
