Genetically engineered Salmonella used to defeat cancer. Salmonella enterica is the specific strain of Salmonella used to kill the cancer cell. It has been shown to not only colonize solid tumors, but also to exhibit an intrinsic antitumor effect. Researchers are focusing to modify lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to make Salmonella less toxic so it doesn't kill the patient instead of curing them.
I think this is a awesome discovery although there is more research to be done and more trial and error. This is truly remarkable and a huge part of future medicine. Bacteria have been here for so long they have to be doing something right, why not use them to learn from and help ourselves.

This is a great discovery and has a lot of potential. As they continue their research, I'm sure they'll find a way to destroy the cancer cells without killing the patient. My only question is: is this universal for all cancers or just a specific one? Cancers differ from person to person and this is another factor that makes curing cancer difficult.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely interesting and it seems like recently there has been a lot of research done around the use of bacteria to help aid in cancer treatments. And I'm also curious as to whether or not this could be used for all types of cancers or whether it will be cancer specific.
