Gene Mutations Tied to Lukemia Rise with Age, According to Studies

According to the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute,  mutations of cells that lead to leukemia has been found in a large proportion of the elderly.  This study contained approximately 4,200 participants that did not show any evidence of blood cancer.  After the study was completed, the conclusion came to 20 percent of the participants that were between the age of 50 to 60 had blood cells with the same gene mutation that leads to leukemia.  Also, 70 percent of the participants that were above the age of 90 had the same gene mutations.

Leukemia is an accumulation of  DNA in blood stem cells overtime.  That being said, it is not guaranteed that the participants in the study will actually have leukemia in their lifetime.   These mutations may very well be harmless for many individuals.
