A mediterranean diet, composing of mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes, and fish, is often hailed as a way to eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight. Researchers have recently found that the diet may also keep your DNA younger and healthier! Researchers took the data from another study and looked at about 4,600 women and their diets and compared that to their telomere length. Telomere length is an indication of age; shorter telomeres are usually found in older people, while longer telomeres are usually found in younger people. It was found that women who ate a mostly mediterranean diet tended to have longer telomeres. If the age of the women was based on their telomere length, the women who ate a more mediterranean diet would be years younger than those who did not.
I think this research is useful in the fact that many people are overweight or are looking for fads to lose weight or be healthier. The mediterranean diet was already thought of as a healthy way to manage your weight and health. With this new research, people have another reason to pursue this way of living.
The quest for the fountain of youth. I'm not much of a vegetable/healthy eater, however, being aware of the benefits of healthy eating and lifestyle choices I'm not surprised that there's a diet that keeps your DNA young. Working with the geriatric population however, I still believe that longevity and lifespan has a lot to do with your genetics not environmental factors. Watching what you eat can definitely influence your health but I don't believe that following this diet alone guarantees more years to your life. Either way this is a great way to encourage healthy eating, who wouldn't want to look, feel, and stay "younger" in a natural way.
ReplyDeleteI love this post because it shows a natural and healthy way to be younger...and thats what everyone is looking for. This promotes that you can be young the healthy way without taking all those drugs and surgeries.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of youth directly related to diet? This is very eye-opening. Maybe soon enough we'll find the secret ingredient to the fountain of youth through this diet (in other words stabilizing the loss of telomeres), or maybe it's a combination of all those foods put together.
