In the article I read scientists have made new evolutionary discoveries about many different species of Anopheles. In 2002, the first genome of an Anopheles was sequenced but now they have sequenced more genomes of more species and compared them to the genomes of other insects such as flies. In the article they explain how there are many different species of Anopheles and that dozens of them contribute to malaria. After sequencing these genomes and comparing to those of other genomes they noticed high rates of gene gain and loss throughout their evolutionary history. Discovering this lead into a lot of information on the phylogeny of these insects how they each live, eat, reproduce, etc. in different environments.
Honestly, I am a little disappointed after reading this article. I felt as if the title was a little misleading because although they did sequence the genome of certain species of Anopheles that can transfer malaria the article did not really go into detail to any of the specific genes that may be associated with malaria or if there are any new ways to prevent malaria. Although, I was slightly disappointed I was still amazed because I think the idea of genome sequencing is amazing and I thought it was very fitting since we recently learned about genome sequencing in class.
