New European Union GMO food rules
Countries in the European Union have been at odds regarding GMO foods. Cultivation of these foods have been under speculation in the EU on health and environmental grounds. Although there is suspicion, the GMO crops have past numerous safety approvals. Regardless countries such as France wishes to ban GMO crops while others like Great Britain argue that that they need to keep up with modern science or risk falling behind.
On Tuesday; 11/11/14, the European parliament took steps to permit the EU states to decide if they would ban the GMO crops. Part of this decision does not allow for GMO companies to negotiate directly with the members of state for approval. This gives the members of state a greater ability to restrict or ban the GMO’s.
There are many factors that need to be looked into before allowing or banning GMO’s. They will have to look at environmental policy, town and country planning, land use, public policy, possible socio-economic impacts, and the European food safety authority will look into possible health impacts caused by GMO’s.
The European Union’s ban on GMO’s can have a major impact on the United States Economy and farming industry. The United States is the top GMO producer in the world, one company that is based in America is the Monsanto Company. This company supplies farmers with their seeds, it is these farmers that have a lot to lose if the European Union bans their crops.
Other impacts that the ban could have on farmers who would be unable to grow GM crops would be they would grow less crops. They would be unable to grow plants that were specially modified to have better taste or more nutrition.
