Is Your Own Parenting Similar to Your Parents?

U.S News recently published an article that has answered the question for many young adults. How do I raise my baby? How do I know what to do? New parents are constantly learning about their baby and how to care for them. Studies suggest that parenting may not be all about learning and trial and error. These skills are in our genes. Genetic influence plays a huge role in parenting. Many think that kids grow up and learn from what they see, leading them to parent whichever way they choose. Researchers have yet to decide whether these genes have a direct or indirect effect on parenting, but final studies concluded that there are multiple factors for parenting styles. Families involved in the studies show 23-40% were influenced by the genes themselves. This issue is quite the controversial one. Parents strongly believe that parenting is influenced by the child's behavior. Truth is, both environment AND genetics simultaneously influence parenting.

Unfortunately parenting can be bad or good. This other related article talks about how environment, drugs and other genes may actually be able to override the predispositions of bad parenting. More evidence is provided throughout this article to prove that genetics can affect parenting skills.

  1. This actually made me think. Before reading this, I believed that parenting was influenced 100% by environmental factors. The fact that there is even a slight chance of genetics behind parenting is a shock to me.
