Can We Trust Monsanto with Our Food?

The topic of people eating genetically modified produce over organic produce has been a debate for some time now; even though genetically modified foods have no human harms caused by eating them. Written in a Scientific American article the debate over the harms caused by these foods is discussed. The idea towards genetically modifiedorganisms (GMOs) is it will cause health problems brought about by the genetic modification to the plant. People think of the deaths and horrors brought about by eating these foods; but think eating organic non GMO fruits and vegetables will help with health. The reasoning for changing the genetics for a plant is make the plant have faster growth rates and form natural defenses like natural herbicides that kill only insects but don't harm animals or humans. Even though researchers have shown that GMO plants do not have detrimental flaws and are just as healthy and nutritious as non GMO plants, the amount of uproar from the public has actually increased over the years. By manipulating genes in plants it lowered the exposure of mycotoxins. This is a highly toxic and carcinogenic compound made by fungi carried by insects. So from forming GMO plants it has actually helped people avoid a harmful fungi and avoid sickness.

Monsanto protest

People will always be worried with health problems by the life style they choose, but GMOs are not a cause for concern for death be food. It is the person choose to either listen to what scientists say about genetically modified foods; or choose to eat organic naturally formed foods. My personal thought is that it is a great thing to produce food for our rapidly growing world population. And as long as it is proven that the food is not harmful in any way I see no reason to buy more expensive organically grown products.
